CBT for Occupational Trauma

CBT For Occupational Trauma

The workplace has rigorous health and safety standards to meet in order to keep employees safe from physical harm. These protocols are in place to minimise the risk of physical injury, and have clear procedures for the response and reporting of any incidents which occur.

For those who experience psychological or emotional trauma in workplace, the guidelines are not so clear. Harassment, bullying, and exclusion at work can have a negative impact on a person’s mental health, but often goes undetected.  Some occupations, such as healthcare professionals may also be exposed to trauma when dealing with patients.

Experiencing occupational trauma can be very harrowing, and can result in a person suffering emotionally, or experiencing feeling of guilt, isolation or anger. It can be incredibly difficult to come to terms with these feelings, especially if the symptoms are relentless. As a result, the person’s career could suffer, or they may feel they need to leave their profession and have unresolved emotions that could lead to anxiety and depression.

Seeking help for occupational trauma can be difficult, but with the help of a qualified cognitive behavioural therapist, there are psychological techniques that can help a person to overcome their traumatic experience and move forwards with their life.

Help for those suffering from occupational trauma

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based form of counselling that helps those who have suffered occupational trauma to challenge the way they view the trauma. Many of the clients we treat have a misconception that they are in some way to blame for their experience or fear it may happen again.

A qualified CBT therapist will guide and support their client, so they can take control of their emotions and develop more helpful ways of processing the traumatic situation.

Regaining confidence after occupational trauma
