What is mindfulness based cognitive therapy?

Mindfulness based cognitive therapy (MBCT) builds on the evidence-based method of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) with the inclusion of meditation and a focus on mindfulness.

Mindfulness allows a person to be aware and engaged with whatever they are doing at the present moment, without interruption, distraction or judgment.  Practising mindfulness supports the principle of CBT, which is to identify and revaluate unhelpful thoughts and beliefs and replace them with a more realistic way of thinking.

Reassess and replace negative thoughts with MBCT

MBCT has proven effective in people with emotional disorders such as depression, or those who are coping with trauma. The therapy encourages people to pay close attention to their current thoughts and feelings without the fear of past events or the worry of what might happen in the future.  By gaining clarity on their thoughts in the present moment, it helps the individual to reassess and replace the negative thoughts that have previously been a trigger for depression or trauma.

The techniques of MBCT

MBCT allows individuals to focus on their breath, be aware of the physical sensations they have and attend to the thoughts and feelings they have in the present. Meditations such as yoga, walking and being at one with thoughts are also encouraged as part of a successful MBCT therapy.

A reputable MBCT therapist will show their client how certain thought pattens can be problematic and cause an emotional escalation that can instigate depression. The aim of the therapy is to provide the client with the tools to disrupt negative thoughts and process their feelings in a more constructive and healthy way.

MBCT can also perpetuate long-term change. Many people feel calmer, more self-aware and gain a fresh perspective on their emotions that brings freedom from stress, trauma and depression.
